Picture Story: The Rescue of a Feral Child

November 03, 2008 "Boy, have I got a story for you," said Carolyn Eastman, director of communications for the Children's Board of Hillsborough County, Florida, when she called St. Petersburg Times reporter Lane DeGregory last February. Shut alone in a room for years by her mentally handicapped mother, seven-year-old Danielle had never learned to speak or even feed herself. The story, called "The Girl in the Window" because Dani had first been spotted as a tiny face in the window by neighbors who hadn't even known she existed, appeared as a six-page special section of the St. Petersburg Times on August 3.
