Wacom Announces Three New Tools in Mobile Line

AUGUST 20, 2013

By Scott Neumyer

As we predicted in our review of the Cintiq 13HD, Wacom has announced three new offerings in their mobile line of products: the Cintiq Companion, Cintiq Companion Hybrid, and the Intuos Creative Stylus. Wacom says the Cintiq Companion was announced in response to "frequent requests from professional customers" for more ways to do their retouching and illustration work work wherever they want.

Cintiq Companion
The first product, the Cintiq Companion, is a full-fledged mobile computing experience with the same key elements of the Cintiq 13HD and 22HD including full HD display with touch control and the Wacom Pro Pen that sports 2048 levels of pressure sensitivity and tilt recognition.

The Cintiq Companion runs Windows 8 and full versions of creative software (like Adobe Photoshop). It is a fully fledged Windows 8 tablet, powered by a 3rd generation Intel Core processor and Intel HD Graphics 4000. Wacom will offer two models of the Cintiq Companion: One with 8GB memory and 256GB SSD with Windows 8 and the other with 8GB memory and 512GB SSD with Windows 8 Pro.

The Cintiq Companion will be valuable in October (pre-order at www.wacom.com). Wacom will be exhibiting at PhotoPlus Expo in New York City, October 24 through 26, and we expect to be able to get a closer look at the Companion at the Wacom booth.

Price: $1,999 for Windows 8 with 256GB SSD, $2499 for Windows 8 Pro with 512GB SSD

Cintiq Companion Hybrid

The Cintiq Companion Hybrid, on the other hand, offers a “two-in-one solution” as it functions as a traditional Cintiq when connected to a Mac or PC, but also works as an Android tablet when unplugged. The tablet comes with an Nvidia Tegra 4 processor, Android Jellybean, and specially designed software such as a the new Wacom Creative Canvas for painting and sketching, as well as the pre-loaded ASTRO File Manager. The Cintiq Companion Hybrid will be available in both 16GB and 32GB versions in mid-September (pre-order at www.wacom.com).

Price: $1499 for 16GB, $1599 for 32GB

Both the Cintiq Companion and the Cintiq Companion Hybrid include tried-and-true Cintiq features such as customizable on-screen controls, ExpressKeys, Rocker Ring, and Radial Menu. They also pack WiFi connectivity, Bluetooth, front (2 megapixels) and rear (8 megapixels) HD cameras, stereo headset jack, and microphone.

Intuos Creative Stylus
Finally, the Intuos Creative Stylus is aimed at the iPad crowd and is a professional-grade pressure-sensitive digital pen for drawing, sketching, painting, and, of course, light retouching. Most styli for sale these days don’t provide any type of pressure-sensitivity, but the Intuos Creative Stylus boasts 2048 pressure levels, is highly responsive (even to light strokes), utilizes Bluetooth 4.0 Smart technology, and rejects unintentional touches when used with compatible creative apps.

What apps are compatible, you ask? Well, for starters Wacom’s very own digital notebook app, Bamboo Paper is supported. Other compatible apps include Autodesk Sketchbook Pro for iPad, ArtRage, ProCreate, and Psykopaint.

The Intuos Creative Stylus comes in either black or blue/black, is ergonomically shaped, and will run for days on one AAAA battery. It also comes with a case that holds the stylus, spare battery, and two replacement nibs. It will be available through Best Buy in early October.
