Shooting with the Nikon D4: Test Images and Video
MARCH 06, 2012
By Dan Havlik
We got our hands on an early review unit of the 16.2-megapixel, FX-format (full-frame) Nikon D4 and have been putting it through its paces with photographer Jordan Matter for the past week. In fact, Matter, a long-time Nikon user, has had so much fun shooting with the D4, it's been hard to get it out of his hands.
Our full review of the 11fps-shooting D4 ($5,999) is slated for the June issue of PDN but in the mean time, we thought we'd post a few high-resolution JPEG samples that Matter captured with the camera for you to peruse, download and inspect. (The first two images were captured as RAW files and converted to JPEGs using Nikon ViewNX2 software. The rest were shot as JPEGs.)
Also embedded at the bottom of this page is a short 1080p HD video he shot with the D4 at ISO 3200. The video was captured at the Spice of India Restaurant & Bar in Nyack, New York, and if you've ever wondered how to make a good margarita, you'll like this clip.
Matter shot these images using the new AF-S Nikkor 85mm f/1.8G prime lens (look for a review of the lens in the May issue of PDN), an AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G lens and the AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D.
The video was shot using the Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 handheld at f/2.8. (Matter told us he shot the clip after having three of those margaritas himself so blame whatever shakiness you see on the tequila rather than the D4 and lens.)
Click on each shot to expand it to its full resolution.
