Want to make your camera really stand out? Maybe you should consider getting one that’s been “pimped” by PimpYourCam.com.
Yes, yes, we know most pros try to keep their pricey cameras as discreet as possible—sometimes by covering the manufacturer logos with black electrical tape—so they don’t get stolen. But do you need to be that subtle with all of your gear? Nay, say we. Live a little!
PimpYourCam is a collaboration between German photographer and author Jens Brüggemann and airbrush artist Torsten Rachu. The pair started off by transforming Nikon 1 compact system cameras—including the J1 and the V1—using a mix of special paints and coatings designed to be durable and protective. More recently, they’ve begun pimping out digital SLRs, including the yellow and black Nikon D4 shown here.
PimpYourCam’s exterior camera designs run the gamut from simulated urban graffiti styles of the 1970s and 1980s to anime-inspired cartoons. Though the service started off primarily Web based, select specialty retailers have reportedly started selling theses unique cameras. (At the time of this writing, a few German photo retailers were listed on PimpYourCam’s Web site as selling the designs.)
Customers can choose pre-designed cameras or make a special request for an individual design (such as with a company logo) via PimpYourCam.com. According to a press release for the company, a “Pimp-configurator allows a lot of different styles and colors.”
Or, in other words, you can get your camera as pimped out as you want it. Just make sure no one gets hurt.
