Nikon Coolpix A compact camera

Object of Desire: Nikon Coolpix A

Cameras don’t have to be big and bulky to produce great image quality. Just take a look at the Nikon Coolpix A, a snazzy little sharpshooter that squeezes a 16.2-megapixel APS-C-sized (DX-format) CMOS sensor into a camera body small enough to fit in your pocket. And yes, the Coolpix A’s imaging chip is as big as those found in some digital SLRs. (It’s reportedly the same one used in the Nikon D7000.)

In front of that sensor in the Coolpix A, Nikon’s placed a 18.5mm (28mm equivalent), fixed focal length Nikkor lens with an f/2.8 aperture, designed to give you a shallow depth of field and blurred backgrounds (aka bokeh) for portrait and macro photography. Other features include a speedy autofocus system with a maximum 4 frames-per-second burst speed for capturing candid moments.

The Coolpix A, which at the time of this writing was slated to go on sale in late March, comes in black and silver versions and has a handsome, cleanly designed, metal camera body. The Coolpix A offers a variety of scene modes, a manual focus ring, full manual exposure controls (P, S, A, M) and is able to shoot RAW/NEF image files, just like Nikon’s top-of-the-line and professional cameras. But at just a few cents shy of $1,100, this small camera with a big sensor sure ain’t cheap.
