Object of Desire: Ilott Vintage Leather Camera Straps

NOVEMBER 21, 2012

By Dan Havlik

In the August 2012 “Objects of Desire” column, we told you about Ilott Vintage’s beautiful line of restored rangefinder cameras with their distinctive, wood veneers. Now the company is back with a handsome collection of classic leather straps you can pair with those cameras (or with any cameras).

Made by hand in the good old U.S. of A., Ilott’s genuine leather straps were inspired by the supplied straps that came with rangefinder cameras in the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s, i.e. leathered, weathered and strong.

Each Ilott strap is individually hand-dyed with non-toxic penetrating dyes, giving them a warm, rich appearance. The edges of the straps are burnished and coated to make them durable. Before the straps are assembled with steel rivets, the full-grain leather is sealed with two layers of water-resistant coating and then buffed with sheep wool for a slightly glossy finish.

Other high-end, protective touches include bumpers on the straps to prevent them from scratching the camera; split rings that attach directly to the camera’s lug mounts; strap keepers to prevent loose ends; and swivel snap hooks so the strap doesn’t twist and will lie flat.

The straps come in two styles, Signature and Classic, and are available in two colors, a dark brown and lighter tan.

Signature, $118; Classic, $58
