Fujifilm Intros X30 with Wi-Fi, Better Battery Life

AUGUST 26, 2014

By Greg Scoblete

Fujifilm drew back the curtain on the newest member of its classically-styled X-series enthusiast camera today, the X30. Replacing the X20, the X30 sports the same 12-megapixel, 2/3-inch X-Trans CMOS image sensor with a color filter array that eliminates the need for an optical low pass filter. It carries the X20's retro styling but adds a number of contemporary goodies including Wi-Fi, a new electronic viewfinder and improved battery life.

Like the X20, the X30 offers a 4x optical zoom lens (28-112mm equivalent) with an f/2.0-2.8 aperture range. Its new OLED-based Real Time Viewfinder offers a magnification of .65x and can adjust brightness automatically based on ambient light levels.

Fujifilm gave the X30 a significant battery boost over its X20 predecessor thanks to a combination of a new battery pack and energy efficiencies in the camera. The company says the X30 can fire off approximately 470 shots per charge. The battery can also now be charged in the camera via a micro USB port.

The X30 will offer built-in Wi-Fi for wirelessly sending images to mobile devices as well as networked PCs.

Manual shooters will have more levers to play with too. Joining the manual zoom ring on the lens is a new control ring for adjusting aperture and shutter speed. Other settings, such as ISO, white balance and film simulation, can be accessed via a control ring button at the front of the camera.

Rounding out the X30's feature set you'll find a tilting 3-inch LCD (920,000 dots), a hybrid AF system capable of focusing in .06 seconds, a startup time of .5 seconds, 12 frames per second continuous shooting (to 11 full-resolution JPEG frames) and 1080/60p HD video recording at 36Mbps.

The X30 is due to dealers this month for $600 in either black or silver.
