Dear Right Moves,
I am creating work for my fashion portfolio. I think my skills as a fashion photographer are good, but my final pictures just don’t look professional. The girls I choose are gorgeous, but somehow their natural gorgeousness doesn’t translate to the final photographs. How do I create professional fashion work without money or professional models?
Project No Way, Lenox, Mass.
Dear Project No Way,
Yes, there are ways to make professional fashion pictures with almost no money and professional models!
First, research the modeling agencies that are nearest to you. Go to their sites. Look at their talent. Call the agency and tell them that you are a fashion photographer who would like to TEST one of their models. Tell them what your idea is for the test. Tell them what you need the model to wear. Get in touch directly with the model as soon as you can. Chances are good that if you have a good idea and the agency can see that you’re a serious photographer, they’ll set an appointment.
Models are always needing new pictures for their portfolios and that is exactly what you will be able to provide. Be sure to give your model ideas for the wardrobe you’ll be needing. Another perk of using a professional, even a very young professional is that they always have tons of clothes!
If you know a girl who has a special talent for make-up, tell her to bring her supplies and come along as the make-up/hair person for the day.
