Me and Theo, 2009

If you're a photographer and someone asks what you do, say "I'm a photographer". Do not say you are an artist. If someone else calls you an artist that's OK. Saying you're an artist is like saying "I am Great". However, if you are comfortable with saying "I am Great", then by all means please do call yourself an artist, but remember, you really are a photographer and that SHOULD be enough. This is what I think.
